After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfill the Scripture), “I thirst.” A jar full of sour wine stood there, so they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it to his mouth.
John 19:28-29
In the passage above, we read that through the pain and shame and weight of our sins, He could see the light at the end of the tunnel in His journey, “knowing that all was now finished” He had one final act to fulfill the Scriptures and so He said the words, “I thirst.”
The soldiers offered Him some sour wine. As one commentary I read stated, ” the soldiers were not showing compassion or care towards Jesus; they presented Him with something unpleasant, possibly to taunt Him in His suffering”, but they didn’t know that there act actually helped fulfill Scripture to the letter.
and for my thirst they gave me sour wine to drink.
Psalm 69:21b
The wine was sour, but His victory over sin for us was sweet.
