“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. Or which one of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!
Matthew 7:7-11
And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.
Hebrews 11:6
In Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount and again with the writer of Hebrews we see the idea of seeking God involves a conscious choice on our part and God’s promise is to reward those who follow hard after Him.
Jesus said we are to ask, seek and knock. Those are acts of doing, right? So it makes sense we can’t coast through the day or week or month and expect to draw nearer to the LORD without being intentional. How?
The first step is one of humility. James emphasized that point as he challenged believers to “draw near to God, and he will draw near to you.”(James 4:8b)
Beyond humility are the obstacles of life. What is it that gets in our way of seeking God? Technology? The busyness of life?
A couple of weeks ago, I listened to Keith Green’s “Oh LORD, You’re Beautiful.” Give some thought to these words as we enter the weekend:
Oh Lord, You're beautiful
Your face is all I seek
For when Your eyes are on this child
Your grace abounds to me
Oh Lord, please light the fire
That once burned bright and clean
Replace the lamp of my first love
That burns with holy fear
