Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality.
Romans 12:11-13
If someone asked you to describe your greatest passion in life, what would your answer be? What is the first thing that comes to mind? If you’re reading this you probably think you should answer that you’re passionate about all things related to God. But, if you talk to anyone for a few minutes you will likely discover their passion. It kind of bubbles up to the surface.
In our society, there are many passions. We have entire television networks dedicated to sports. Entertainment. Food. You name it, I even spent some time watching some streaming pickleball matches a couple of weeks ago.
With all the competing interests in our modern life, how would any of us really rank our passion for God at this moment?
In the verses above, Paul warns against becoming lax in our enthusiasm for the things of the LORD and challenges the Romans (and us) to be fervent – displaying a passionate intensity. He then lists several contributors to a fervent life in Christ.
- Rejoice in hope – Always remember to look ahead to the prize of eternal life in Christ (Philippians 3:13).
- Be patient in tribulation – Circumstances can change and we can face suffering. I think of a number of friends who have faced the death of someone close to them recently.
- Be constant in prayer – Times of tribulation often drive us to our knees, but we should be praying continuously (1 Thessalonians 5:17).
- Contribute to the needs of the saints. Helping others is a great way to shift the focus from ourselves.
- Show hospitality. Last week we reconnected by hosting some friends and those times are always refreshing.
