A time for everything

For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven:
A time to be born, and a time to die;
A time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted;
A time to kill, and a time to heal;
A time to break down, and a time to build up;
A time to weep, and a time to laugh;
A time to mourn, and a time to dance;
A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together;
A time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;
A time to seek, and a time to lose;
A time to keep, and a time to cast away;
A time to tear, and a time to sew;
A time to keep silence, and a time to speak;
A time to love, and a time to hate;
A time for war, and a time for peace.

Ecclesiastes 3:1-9

This morning one of the pastors began his sermon using the passage above to speak about the seasons of life. You’re probably familiar with the passage. I’ve heard these words at funerals, seen them used in films and heard them through songs like “Turn! Turn! Turn!” by the Byrds. In fact that song is made up almost entirely of the words from the verses above.

Over the last few months I witnessed a number of friends making transitions in life through the loss of someone close to them and I’ve known a few who have retired and are settling into a new rhythm of life and I’ve seen others making other changes in their lives. Change is one of the constants in the human condition and life is full of ups and downs.

Since change is inevitable, I think one of the primary points found in the passage above is found in how we respond to the circumstances in our lives and acknowledge God’s presence in all that we experience.
