He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end.

Ecclesiastes 3:11

Yesterday I listened to a podcast from the UK as a secular humanist debated a Christian philosopher. I couldn’t help but notice the hopelessness of the humanist’s position. He spent much of his time trying to discredit the idea of human beings representing anything but a complex set of cells like any other animal.

In the verse above we read a very familiar saying, acknowledging God has “set eternity in the human heart” and that sense is there whether we like it or not. This is part of the mystery of how God has put us together, yet what we know is limited and we lack the ability to truly understand all that God has done “from beginning to end.”

Paul echoed the prophet Isaiah in his second letter to the Corinthians –

“What no eye has seen, nor ear heard,
nor the heart of man imagined,
what God has prepared for those who love him”

2 Corinthians 2:9

No matter the season of our life, we live day to day anticipating God’s promise and the day when “He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away”(Revelation 21:4). On that day, everything will truly be beautiful in its time.
