Count the days

So teach us to number our days
that we may get a heart of wisdom.

Psalm 90:10

Our world influences us to live our lives in pursuit of career, education, success and even family. While each of those things are admirable to a point, we miss the larger point if any of them overshadow our relationship with God.

In the 90th Psalm, attributed to Moses, we are challenged to consider the brevity of life –

“For all our days pass away under your wrath;
we bring our years to an end like a sigh.
The years of our life are seventy,
or even by reason of strength eighty;
yet their span is but toil and trouble;
they are soon gone, and we fly away.

Psalm 90: 9-11

It’s not that we may live to 70, 80 or even 100, life is always full of challenges at any age and so if we “number our days” we will learn to value them and live our lives with intentionality, looking how to honor God and the people around us.

The psalmist recognized that living life focused on what is trivial or temporary is not the best use of our time. Instead, we should prioritize those things that really matter, making good choices and managing our time wisely so that our actions provide a sense of fulfillment and hopefully a lasting impact on the generations that follow.

What could be more valuable than seeing the generations that follow be faithful followers of Christ?
