“As long as the earth endures, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night will never cease”
Genesis 8:22
Years ago my company encouraged us to read the book, Who Moved My Cheese? An Amazing Way to Deal with Change in Your Work and in Your Life by Spence Johnson in preparation for an upcoming reorganization of the company. The truth is that few people accept change with an open embrace. Most of us respond less enthusiastically.
In the passage above, God makes the statement to Noah shortly after the Flood and you’ll notice that one thing is constant in the earth. Change.
We plan seeds and look forward to the harvest. We experience cold and heat and enjoy the comfortable days we’ve had over the last few days. We know that winter is coming even when the year is still officially in summer and every morning we wake up to the light after a dark night.
But what if change is unwanted? What if our circumstances bring us to a place where change is inevitable if we are to move forward with our lives? We need to look beyond the change and discomfort in the moment. Winter is barren, but the even in the darkest and shortest days of winter, we know that Spring and then Summer will follow.
Everyone I know has experienced some ups and downs in life. If, like some of my peers, you are “displaced” during a restructuring in your workplace, look for what may lie ahead. If there is difficulty in a relationship, things may have changed, but there is hope to be found in changing circumstances because we should remember this –
And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.
Romans 8:28
God has our best in mind, no matter the season of the moment.
