Unworthy, but loved.

God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Romans 5:8

As we walked through the airport in Phoenix this morning on our way to baggage claim, I couldn’t help but notice the two simple words as tattoos on the front of a young woman’s legs. On her right leg, just above her knee was the word “worthy” and on the other leg the word “enough.”

I was curious as to why those words would be so prominently displayed, so I looked up the meaning generally found in those words when used as tattoos. Both are associated with self-affirmation and self-love to a degree and I don’t really challenge the lady’s reasoning, but it gave me time to think about those words in my own life.

When I was younger I might have thought a little too highly of myself and my own importance, but life has a way of bringing us around, doesn’t it? Now, the older I get, the more convinced I am of just how unworthy I am and I am certainly never enough, but I am loved.

In the passage above, Paul expresses just how much God loves the unworthy sinner and in John 3:16 Jesus clarifies God’s love of mankind –

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.

John 3:16-17

Recognizing our own need of the Savior is found first with a right view of God. A.W. Tozer famously said, “”What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us.”

Do we see God as holy and recognize the truth found in the opening line of the hymn – Amazing Grace –

Amazing grace (how sweet the sound)
that saved a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am found,
was blind, but now I see.

Not one of us is worthy. Not one of us is enough without Christ, but we are loved by the holy God.
