Wherever you go…without a map

By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place that he was to receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going. By faith he went to live in the land of promise, as in a foreign land, living in tents with Isaac and Jacob, heirs with him of the same promise. For he was looking forward to the city that has foundations, whose designer and builder is God.

Hebrews 11:8-10

This weekend Patrina and I towed our camper to a familiar place to spend some time with family at a reunion. We didn’t need a map and we knew where we were headed, but there are many who have gone before us who have taken risks. My great-grandparents were among those who traveled from across the world to settle in rural part of Kentucky. It’s a common story in America and I supposed we all take some risks, but none compare to the life of the patriarch of Israel.

Abraham’s journey began with obedience to a call to leave home and then follow God’s direction to a place he had never seen-

Now the LORD said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you. And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”

Genesis 12:1-4

From what we know, Abraham left all of his comfortable surroundings, his relatives and all that he knew to move away and follow God’s direction. Abraham’s faith resulted in a life of obedience.

How has God asked you to leave your comfort zone? How have you responded to that call?
