More than intellect, power and position

As to zeal, a persecutor of the church; as to righteousness under the law, blameless. But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord.

Philippians 3:6-7

Have you known someone who was so passionate about something?

Paul is one of my favorite characters in the Bible. He was a kind of man who was fully committed to what he deemed critical to his mission. In Paul’s world, it was not just his heritage and upbringing that indicated his success in life. In the verses above he uses two additional words to describe his accomplishments. He possessed great zeal for his faith. He demonstrated the depth of his enthusiasm for Judaism by his persecution of those who followed Christ. According to the Old Testament law he was blameless. Blameless? How many of us could confidently state our adherence to even our own moral code?

Paul was well known in his circles and, maybe just as importantly, he knew himself. He was competitive and he had plenty to be proud of in his life, but he discovered there was something much more important than his intellect, his power, his position or his success.

“But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ.”

Today I am left with one simple question – What have I built my life upon?
