His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness.
For this very reason make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love.
2 Peter 1:3, 5-7
Every day of our lives presents an opportunity for growth in our walk with Christ, if we are just aware of it. In the verses above we learn that through His supernatural power, God “has given us everything we need for a godly life.”
“We must assess our thoughts and beliefs and reckon whether they are moving us closer to conformity to Christ or farther away from it.”
– John Ortberg
We begin with faith and then grow in moral excellence, knowledge of God’s word, living a life of self-control, the ability to endure pain and hardship, godliness as we are centered on God’s character, mutual affection for those in our circle and love that extends to those on the outside.
Peter acknowledges that God is the supernatural source of our growth, but invites each of us to participate actively in the process.
So, since God is a work in me, how am I participating in the transformation? Am I making every effort? Where is there room to grow?
