Bringing Joy to the World!

Joy to the world, the Lord is come;
Let earth receive her King!
Let every heart prepare him room
And heaven and nature sing!
And heaven and nature sing!
And heaven, and heaven, and nature sing. - lsaac Watts

Issac Watts was a pastor and hymn writer who wrote a book of poems more than three hundred years ago. Among those compositions was the poem based on Psalm 98.

The LORD has made known his salvation;
he has revealed his righteousness in the sight of the nations.
He has remembered his steadfast love and faithfulness
to the house of Israel.
All the ends of the earth have seen
the salvation of our God.
Make a joyful noise to the LORD, all the earth;
break forth into joyous song and sing praises!

Psalm 98: 2-4

Some have said that Watts didn’t intend to write a poem about the birth of Christ, but of his Second Coming when all things will be made right.

"Joy to the earth, the Savior reigns!
Let men their songs employ
While fields and floods, rocks, hills, and plains,
Repeat the sounding joy! Repeat the sounding joy!
Repeat . . . repeat . . . the sounding joy!
No more let sins and sorrows grow,
Nor thorns infest the ground;
He comes to make his blessings flow
Far as the curse is found!

Whether by accident or not, Watts conveys the hope of Christmas because each component of Christ's life was critical for completion of God's plan to redeem us. He was born of a virgin. He lived and then died as a sacrificial life. And He rose from the dead to eternal life! He is the Joy of the World!
