When courage grows

In God, whose word I praise, In God I have put my trust; I shall not be afraid.  What can mere man do to me?

Psalm 56: 4

Earlier this week in our Bible study, two of the younger men around the table had an honest exchange. One said he didn’t really care what others thought of him. The other pushed back, suggesting that maybe it’s not that simple.

Their conversation struck a chord with me. Haven’t we all wrestled with that question at some point?

What will they think of me if I stand by my convictions?
What if I’m misunderstood?
What if I lose relationships because I won’t compromise?

Peer pressure doesn’t disappear with age. It just changes shape. Sometimes it’s subtle. Sometimes it’s loud. But the pull to please people rather than honor God is something every believer has felt.

Scripture is refreshingly honest about this struggle. Many well-known figures in both the Old and New Testaments faltered when they chose approval in the moment over obedience to God. Their stories remind us that the fear of people is powerful—but it is not ultimate.

Jesus speaks directly to this in Gospel of Luke 12:4:
“I tell you, my friends, do not fear those who kill the body, and after that have nothing more that they can do.”

And Book of Proverbs 29:25 warns us plainly:
“The fear of man lays a snare, but whoever trusts in the LORD is safe.”

Fear of man traps us. Trust in the Lord frees us.

It’s easy to nod in agreement on Sunday morning or during a Bible study. It’s harder on Thursday morning when the pressure is real and the cost feels immediate. But courage grows as we anchor ourselves in truth. When we remember who ultimately holds our lives, reputations, and futures, the opinions of others begin to lose their grip.

You are safest—not when everyone approves of you—but when you trust the Lord and walk faithfully with Him.
