Put your gifts to work

Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.

1 Peter 4:10

Scripture calls us to live “as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.” Those words remind us that God’s grace shows up in many different ways through many different people.

Yet we sometimes fall into the trap of thinking that the most important gifts are the visible ones—preaching from a pulpit or teaching a class. While those gifts are certainly valuable, the body of Christ is built on far more than what happens in front of a crowd. There are countless ways to faithfully steward what God has given us.

Paul paints a powerful picture of this in his letter to the Romans –

“For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others.
We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.”

Romans 12:4–8

Paul’s list isn’t meant to capture every possible gift God gives His people. Instead, it shows the beautiful variety of ways God works through us. Some encourage. Some serve quietly behind the scenes. Some give generously. Some lead. Some show compassion to those who are hurting.

Many believers discover that God has given them more than one gift—and every one of them matters.

The real question is not whether we have gifts. God has already given them according to His grace. The real question is whether we are using them.

When we stay on the sidelines and refuse to step into the game, the whole body of Christ feels the loss. Someone misses the encouragement they needed. A need goes unmet. An opportunity to show Christ’s love passes by.
