So God has given both his promise and his oath. These two things are unchangeable because it is impossible for God to lie. Therefore, we who have fled to him for refuge can have great confidence as we hold to the hope that lies before us.
Hebrews 6:18
We began this look into the lies we can get caught up in by considering the fact that our enemy is a liar, the Father of Lies and so it should be no surprise to read the exact opposite is true of God.
It is impossible for God to lie.
In the passage above, God’s promise includes the hope we have of eternal life through the work of Christ even when Abraham first heard God’s promise of blessing.
God also promises judgment and so let’s consider one last passage on the people who trouble others with lies and ultimately bring destruction to them and their followers:
But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing upon themselves swift destruction. And many will follow their sensuality, and because of them the way of truth will be blasphemed. And in their greed they will exploit you with false words. Their condemnation from long ago is not idle, and their destruction is not asleep.
2 Peter 2:1-3
Finally, let’s remember this – “The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance” (2 Peter 3:9).
Even in a world filled with lies, God’s greatest desire is that everyone would live and repent. Unfortunately for many, they would rather hold on to their lie.
