They didn’t know who

Sweet Little Jesus child
Born in a manger
sweet little Jesus child
They didn’t know who you were
Some say you were a prophet
Some say you were just a man
Sweet little Jesus child
They didn’t know who, who you were

In the opening lines of “Sweet Little Jesus Child/Go Tell it on the Mountain” above, the composer acknowledged what many are still discussing today – all world religions acknowledge Jesus as a prophet and there is really no one who contends Jesus was a fictional character, but only one proclaimed Jesus to be LORD.

Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” And they said, “Some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”

Matthew 16: 13-16

This is a statement that separates Christianity from the rest and as I’ve quoted here before from C.S.Lewis –

“Jesus [. . .] told people that their sins were forgiven. [. . .] This makes sense only if He really was the God whose laws are broken and whose love is wounded in every sin. [. . .] I am trying here to prevent anyone saying the really foolish thing that people often say about Him: “I’m ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don’t accept His claim to be God.”

That is the one thing we must not say. A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic—on a level with the man who says he is a poached egg—or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You can shut Him up for a fool, you can spit at Him and kill Him as a demon; or you can fall at His feet and call Him Lord and God. But let us not come with any patronising nonsense about His being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to.” – C.S. Lewis

And so, if we believe, doesn’t it make sense to carry out the mission of the song –

So I say go tell It the on the mountain
Over the hills and everywhere
Go tell it on the mountain
That Jesus Christ is Lord
