Not moderately important.

Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you-unless you believed in vain.

1 Corinthians 15:1-2

I look forward to this week every year because it provides an opportunity to once again read through what may be one of the most important chapters in the Bible. This chapter provides the single most significant commentary on the relevance of Christianity today, for without the literal resurrection of Christ, our faith is completely irrelevant. I think of this quote often because C.S. Lewis captures the essence of the point.

“Christianity, if false, is of no importance, and if true, of infinite importance. The only thing it cannot be is moderately important.”

C.S. Lewis

What does Christianity have to say about life in the 21st century? Is our faith out-of-date, disconnected or irrelevant? Or is it meaningful and relevant to our lives?

A psychiatrist acquaintance of mine once told me that during the Easter season this year she takes the time to read through one if the Gospels. It’s not because she believes them to be truthful, but she reads them out of a sense of obligation or perhaps it is nothing more than a sentimental reminder of her education on another continent. I suggested she read 1 Corinthians 15 instead.

So, thus week I challenge you to give careful consideration to the message of 1 Corinthians 15 as we consider that our faith is not of no importance or moderately importance, the Gospel is of infinite importance and is the only path that leads to life after this life.
