You were made to know

Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.

2 Timiothy 2:15

You were made to know God’s Word.

While I was at the gym this morning, I listened to today’s sermon by Alistair Begg and was struck by these words:

“Without a daily diet of the Word of God, we will find ourselves living in immaturity… It is both foolish and dangerous, and it will stunt your spiritual growth, if the Bible is not, on a routine basis, the lamp and the direction of your life.”

— Alistair Begg, Daniel’s Prayer (Part 1 of 2), July 29, 2026

Think about physical exercise. What if someone worked out only once a week? It would certainly be better than not exercising at all, but if the goal is to become stronger and healthier, it takes consistency. Progress comes through regular commitment, not occasional effort.

Why, then, would we expect our spiritual lives to flourish if we only hear a sermon on Sunday or read a few verses every now and then?

Paul challenged Timothy with these words:

“But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.”
— 2 Timothy 3:14–17

Sermons can be valuable. Christian books can sharpen our thinking. Worship music can encourage. But none of these can replace personally spending time in God’s Word. It is there that He teaches, corrects, encourages, and transforms us.

As I write this, I find myself challenged as much as anyone else. This isn’t just a reminder for others—it’s a call for me too. May we all make time each day to open God’s Word and allow it to shape our hearts, our minds, and our lives.
