“Can a woman forget her nursing child,
that she should have no compassion on the son of her womb?
Even these may forget,
yet I will not forget you.
Behold, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands;
your walls are continually before me.

Isaiah 45:15-16

Have you ever felt forgotten? All alone? In the passage above, the LORD reassures his people of His persistent care for them.

Historically and across cultures we generally know a a mother’s love is unique in that even when a child goes astray, the mother will still love her child. Some mothers will love their children no matter what they do. Unfortunately, we also know that in rare instances a mother can turn away even from her own children and as recent headlines remind us, it can sometimes be worse than that.

Even if your own mother disowns you, the LORD never forgets. The imagery of being “engraved on the palms of my hands” speaks to that permanent commitment. I am reminded of the LORD’s promise to Joshua –

No man shall be able to stand before you all the days of your life. Just as I was with Moses, so I will be with you. I will not leave you or forsake you.

Joshua 1:5

Just as the LORD was with Moses and then Joshua, He will be with us through every circumstance. Don’t be discouraged.
