How beautiful upon the mountains
are the feet of him who brings good news,
who publishes peace, who brings good news of happiness,
who publishes salvation,
who says to Zion, “Your God reigns.”

Isaiah 52:7

There was a worship song we used to sing when I was younger based on the passage above. “Our God Reigns”, quoted much of the passage verbatim and so, as someone with less than beautiful feet, I can say that at a first glance, this passage from Isaiah is a bit puzzling.

Yes, feet are important, providing us with the stabilization to stand, walk and run, but beautiful? The truth is the passage isn’t about feet at all. It is about the good news intended to reveal the Salvation of God.

In his letter to the Romans, Paul quoted from this passage –

For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!”

Romans 10:13-15

I first memorized this passage when I was in high school, but memorization isn’t the key. The key is to apply the Scripture in our everyday lives. If we believe that “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved”, then who might we have an opportunity to speak with today about the good news?
