And when he got into the boat, his disciples followed him. And behold, there arose a great storm on the sea, so that the boat was being swamped by the waves; but he was asleep. And they went and woke him, saying, “Save us, Lord; we are perishing.” And he said to them, “Why are you afraid, O you of little faith?” Then he rose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm. And the men marveled, saying, “What sort of man is this, that even winds and sea obey him?”

Matthew 8:23-27

I can think of several people who have faithfully followed Jesus only to find themselves in the storms of life. In the passage above, we find the disciples literally doing just that as they followed Him on to a boat just before a storm broke out on the Sea of Galilee. It was anything but smooth sailing.

John’s gospel tells us –

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.

John1:1-3

All things, including the wind and the waves, were made through Him, so why shouldn’t be able to speak a word and find calm.

As for me, I’m sure I would likely to have been frantic in the moment, just like them. How about you?

The storm was real to the disciples and not of us are likely to experience the same kind of circumstances, but I think we can safely extend the point to consider the storms of life I mentioned above. When we face those, we can also lean on Jesus to make it through the storm and come out safely on the other side.
