Since it was the day of Preparation, and so that the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken and that they might be taken away. So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first, and of the other who had been crucified with him. But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once there came out blood and water.
John 19:31-34
This morning I spent a few minutes talking to a spiritual person who is looking for answers. She has a background in Christianity, but her views are more syncretistic in that she is attempting to combine elements from several different thoughts while still trying to keep Jesus in the picture.
Why do you think people do this? Even Muslims hold Jesus in high regard, but they want to fit Jesus into their religion and It’s a task that leads to confusion and despair eventually because either Jesus is who the Bible describes Him to be or, as C.S. Lewis has written he is something else.
“A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic—on a level with the man who says he is a poached egg—or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You can shut Him up for a fool, you can spit at Him and kill Him as a demon; or you can fall at His feet and call Him Lord and God. But let us not come with any patronising nonsense about His being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to.”
C.S. Lewis, mere christianity
Instead of reading something proclaiming “secret teachings of Christ” like those found in the “Gospel of Thomas,” I encouraged her to look to the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John for the truth about who Jesus is.
In the passage above we see that even after Jesus died He continued to fulfill Scripture. John explained further as an actual eyewitness to these accounts-
He who saw it has borne witness—his testimony is true, and he knows that he is telling the truth—that you also may believe. For these things took place that the Scripture might be fulfilled: “Not one of his bones will be broken.” And again another Scripture says, “They will look on him whom they have pierced.”
John 19:35-27
The Biblical accounts we have are trustworthy and so as we enter this Easter weekend, let’s remember the death and burial of Christ and the powerful resurrection that promises life to those who believe.
