Turning 50

Read: Philippians 3: 13-14

13 But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead,
14 I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

Reflect:

On Friday evening Patrina arranged for a group of friends to surprise me at dinner to kick off a weekend of celebrations for my 50th birthday.  Before we began enjoying our meals one of our friends prayed over the food and included a few words about the next 50 years.  It is highly unlikely that I’ll see age one hundred, but it does beg the question that has been a theme for me over the past few years – what will really matter 50 years from now?

In Christian Reflections on the Leadership Challenge the editors comment: When all is said and done, meeting the leadership challenge is a personal-and a daily-challenge. At the end of our days, the legacy we leave is the life we lead. The question that we now need to ask ourselves is, How am I going to fully use myself to make a difference in the world?

That’s the message Paul expressed in his letter to the Philippians.  Paul would not dwell on the successes or failures of the last fifty years, he would simply continue the journey toward Christ.

Respond:

As we begin another week, let’s take this to heart.  On this day let’s make the choices that will make a lasting legacy.
