Counter-Intuitive Thinking

Read: Matthew 5: 4-5

4 “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
5 “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.

Reflect:
After the recent school shooting in Connecticut, some of the most compelling photos were of the parents and family members who survived. Those photos captured the transparency of grief in the moment.

It is likely that you have experienced a deeply felt sense of grief at some point in your life.  Maybe it was the loss of someone close to you, a broken relationship or a poor decision that wreaked havoc in your life. Jesus says that those that mourn will be comforted.  We may not experience consolation at every moment today, but if we will live lives surrendered to Christ, our longing for healing and forgiveness will be realized.

The next thought is just as counter-intuitive to our way of thinking.  The meek shall inherit the earth? In our world those who assert themselves over others in order to further their own agendas in their own strength succeed, but Jesus reminds us that it is trust in God, not ourselves, that reveals true humility.

Respond:

Let’s not make the mistake of rushing past these verses. Are we preoccupied with our circumstances or are we trusting Christ in all things?
