Listening and Acting

By faith Noah, being warned by God concerning events as yet unseen, in reverent fear constructed an ark for the saving of his household. By this he condemned the world and became an heir of the righteousness that comes by faith.

Hebrews 11:7

We’re taking a few days to travel out to see grandkids in Phoenix and today as we drove across Texas, Patrina and I listened to John MacArthur’s sermon today as he described the folly of men who think they can save the planet and ignore how God, the Creator, actually used His own creation to wipe out nearly all of humanity.

The LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And the LORD regretted that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him to his heart. So the LORD said, “I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the land, man and animals and creeping things and birds of the heavens, for I am sorry that I have made them.” But Noah found favor in the eyes of the LORD.

Genesis 6:5-8

I find the story of Noah to be almost beyond comprehension. Somehow Noah stood out among all of mankind while the rest of the world devolved into chaos. Noah found favor. Noah listened and then he put God’s plan into action.

What if Noah heard God’s word and then ignored Him? James reminds us that faith without action is worthless – “Be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves” (James 1:22).

Today we have God’s Word that instructs us on how we should live in order to honor him. Will we be doers like Noah put our faith into action?
