Mere mortals?

Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said,

“Never will I leave you;
never will I forsake you.”

So we say with confidence,

The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid.
What can mere mortals do to me?”

Hebrews 13:5,6

This afternoon I listened to a podcast interview discussing the state of our world in some depth. Two things surprised me at least a little bit. When asked about his outlook for the next few years, the podcast guest said that he sees “darker days ahead.” And then he immediately expressed significant optimism.

From what I could gather from listening in, neither man was a believer, but the “faith” expressed could have been spoken by a believer like the writer of Hebrews in the verses above.

In spite of our circumstances, we have God’s promise that He will never leave us. He will never turn His back on us. Never. And so, we can also rest on the promise from Psalm 118, “The LORD is my helper, I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?”

Do those words encourage you? What can a puny human do to me that will last?

The second part of Romans 8:31 asks essentially the same question –

“If God is for us, who can be against us?”
