Hear and Do or Hear and Don’t

“Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.”

Luke 6:24-27

Today a young lady who works in one of the offices I call on showed me a couple of pictures of the process of building a new home. The foundation was excavated, but now they are waiting for better weather to pour the footings. Everything else is on hold until they have a solid foundation.

For most of us, that is probably an obvious observation. We wouldn’t build our homes without a solid foundation, but how many are building their lives carelessly? How many know the truth, but choose not to listen and go their own way?

Jesus describes two kinds of people who hear His teaching – those who hear and do what he teaches and build their lives on that solid foundation and those who hear the same instruction but fail to do as Jesus says.

For a while, both homes looked well constructed, but only one had a solid foundation and that was revealed during the storm. What do the storms of life reveal about the foundations of our lives?
