Engaging the Enemy

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.

Ephesians 6: 10-11

When considering the topic of the enemy of the Christian, it seems that there are generally two types of people – those who scoff at the notion of Satan in any form and those who attribute too much credit for the influence of Satan in our world.  Which description applies best to you?

Scripture tells us that the supernatural is real and so is Lucifer or Satan or the Devil, and we are not describing some kind of cartoon character dressed in red tights and carrying a pitchfork. Scripture teaches first refers to Satan in Genesis and he is mentioned throughout the Bible until the final judgment in Revelation. 20th Century pastor, Archibald Brown, commented that “The existence of the devil is so clearly taught in the Bible that to doubt it is to doubt the Bible itself.”

Consider the contrast of Jesus’ words with those of Satan: Christ told his followers that “if you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (John 8:31-32). Just a few verses later Christ described the word of Satan who “is a liar and the father of lies.”

Chip Ingram lists the following lies used to attack Christ’s followers:

  • False philosophies – Colossians 2:8
  • False religions – 1 Corinthians 10:19
  • False ministers – 2 Corinthians 11:14-15
  • False doctrine – 1 John 2:18
  • False disciples – Matthew 13
  • False morals – 2 Thessalonians 2:7

Are we being influenced by any of the above?
