So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”John 8:31-32
This morning I spent some time with an immigrant from Eastern Europe. He grew up in a communist country and today he wanted to tell me about his experience with Pravda, the Soviet Union’s newspaper. As we talked I remembered that Pravda was the Russian word for Truth, but was it the Truth? He told me it was nothing more than propaganda used to build up the government and tear down its enemies.
But that is not the truth, is it?
In the verses above, Jesus provides an often quoted phrase – “you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
But He is not speaking of some kind of objective truth. He is stating that He is the Truth and in order to know the Truth, we must abide in his word, and then as his disciples, we will know the Truth. Then we are able to face the facts.
In this chaotic world, I am sometimes surprised by the people I encounter or read about who are honestly searching for Truth. This evening I listened to an interview with a man who I believe is on a journey of searching for truth himself and while I will probably never meet him, I hope he does discover and is willing to embrace the Truth.
The Truth is a Person.
