Having received this order, he put them into the inner prison and fastened their feet in the stocks. About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them

Acts 16:24-25

This evening, I listened to a group of men and women from the Navajo nation singing old songs in English and in Navajo and the evening was led by a German immigrant who recently became a citizen. It was a wonderful evening in the mountains of New Mexico.

Two thousand years ago, two men were singing together in a foreign country in very different circumstances.

Have you ever been punished for doing something good for another person? That’s the outcome Paul and Silas faced after freeing a young woman from demon possession. They were falsely accused, beaten, and thrown in jail for the night complete with feet fastened in stocks.

How did they respond? In the verses above, we read that Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to the LORD as the prisoners listened

How would you respond in a similar situation? I’m not sure I would be singing psalms out loud.
