Habits and Character

Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.

Colossians 3:12-14

When we think of upright living, it is often easy to come up with a list of do’s and don’ts, but overlook the character of the Christian life. Consider this quote from John Charles Ryle, an Anglican pastor from the nineteenth century –

Doctrine is useless—if it is not accompanied by a holy life. It is worse than useless; it does positive harm. Something of the ‘image of Christ’must be seen and observed in our private life, and habits, and character, and doings.

J.C. Ryle

According to Paul, what we put on is as important as what we put away. Let our character reveal the “image of Christ” in our own lives.
