Prominence or Significance?

I have given you an example to follow. Do as I have done to you.

John 13:15

How many prominent people do you know on a personal level? Over the years, I’ve known a few but none of them had a direct influence on my life, especially as it relates to who I am today.

Last week I was assigned a project to evaluate some of the people who impacted my life significantly. I think for most of us, our parent’s impact is worthy of attention as their lives shaped ours, for good or bad, wouldn’t you agree?

While my parents were not perfect, they surely had a positive effect on my life. As part of the project I was asked to be concise and so I remember this story I observed involving Dad –

You know my Dad was a pastor and that he was also a businessman, and his Christianity was central to every part of his life. On one occasion, I remember a man who struggled with alcohol for much of his adult life. As a pastor, Dad engaged with him and prayed with him, but he also created a job for him and provided a place for the man and his wife to live.

It was a significant act and an example that passes the test of time.

“We need to get rid of the notion that prominence is the definition of significance – prominence happens to a few people, significance is intended for every person.”

Jack Hayford
