Judging a book by its cover

“…The Lord doesn’t see things the way you see them. People judge by outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”

1 Samuel 16:7

Earlier this week I referred to a quote from a recently deceased pastor –

“We need to get rid of the notion that prominence is the definition of significance – prominence happens to a few people, significance is intended for every person.”

Jack Hayford

I think the words of the LORD to Samuel in the verse above go hand in hand with Hayford’s thought above. As human beings, we often place too much emphasis on status and too little on character. We judge the cover of the book instead of reading the pages inside, don’t we?

This afternoon I spoke with a woman who meets all kinds of people in her place of business and over the time I’ve known her, she has consistently looked for opportunities to reach others with the Gospel. She’s mentioned family members and strangers and co-workers. Like most of us, she is not a prominent person, but she doing significant work in the lives of others.

So can we.
