Slave or free?

Today as our nation celebrates Independence with cookouts and fireworks, let’s consider the true freedom we experience in Christ.

Americans talk a lot about freedom, but do we really understand what freedom means?

As we walked along a trail in the Upper Penisula of Michigan, Patrina and I briefly discussed the consequences of living a life that “feels” like freedom but is really nothing more than slavery.

True freedom is only found by living our lives pleasing to God. Jesus reminded us that the thief comes to steal kill and destroy. The enemy wants to harm us, but Jesus came so that we might have life – abundant life (John 10:10).

Jesus died once for us so that we could be free to live lives every day for God. He came to give us the abundant life.

Consider the words of Paul to the Romans –

Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness? But thanks be to God, that you who were once slaves of sin have become obedient from the heart to the standard of teaching to which you were committed, and, having been set free from sin, have become slaves of righteousness.

Romans 6: 16-18

Being set free from sin is the beginning of real freedom, guaranteed by God.
