Making ripples of light

For so the Lord has commanded us, saying,
“‘I have made you a light for the Gentiles,
that you may bring salvation to the ends of the earth.’”
And when the Gentiles heard this, they began rejoicing and glorifying the word of the Lord, and as many as were appointed to eternal life believed.

Acts 13:47-48

In this week between Christmas and the New Year, we’ve considered how Jesus is the Light of the world, but Jesus also expects us to be a light in our own circles of influence.

“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.

Matthew 5:14-16

And so it shouldn’t be a surprise that In the verses above, Paul quoted the words of Isaiah to prove his point to those who questioned his work among the people of the world beyond his own Jewish roots. We are called to do the same.

Years ago I read a book called Making Ripples by Mike Breux. In this short book, he detailed instances of how we have the opportunity to have a Gospel impact on the people around us, either directly or indirectly. The truth is that we are making ripples of some kind, let’s make ripples of light that point people to our “Father who is in heaven.”
