Pierced and Crushed, but

by | Feb 14, 2024 | Genuine Hope | 0 comments

Surely he has borne our griefs
and carried our sorrows;
yet we esteemed him stricken,
smitten by God, and afflicted.
But he was pierced for our transgressions;
he was crushed for our iniquities;
upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace,
and with his wounds we are healed.

Isaiah 53:4-5

Do you have any regrets in life? It’s not difficult for me to come up with more than a few times my actions have certainly grieved God and so when I read the first couple of lines in the passage above, I am reminded that Jesus carried the weight of my sin to the cross.

Zechariah also prophesied of the type of death Jesus would experience –

“Then I will pour out a spirit of grace and prayer on the family of David and on the people of Jerusalem. They will look on me whom they have pierced and mourn for him as for an only son. They will grieve bitterly for him as for a firstborn son who has died.

Zechariah 12:10

Here’s another question – when was the last time you grieved bitterly? I think of the tears Peter shed after denying Christ three times. Peter realized his failure to keep his word and regretted it.

It was for Peter’s sins that Jesus was pierced. It was for my transgressions and the weight of my iniquities that crushed Jesus on the cross.

That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying, Himself took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses.

Matthew 8:17

But there is good news – Jesus’ sacrifice brings true peace and healing to those who follow Him.
