Rubbing Shoulders is Infectious

“Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you? Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what he is like: he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when a flood arose, the stream broke against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built. But the one who hears and does not do them is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the stream broke against it, immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great.”

Luke 6:46-49

On Sunday morning many of us sat in a worship service, sang a few songs, and listened to the words of of sermon, but will those words have any impact on how we live today? I suppose much of that depends on what you heard yesterday, but if you heard a Gospel-inspired message, will it cause you to act differently today?

Jesus wasn’t interested in the prospect of people only paying lip service to Him. In the passage above He describes those who hear His “words and do them” as the kind of person who builds a house on a firm foundation of bedrock. A life built on a solid foundation of faithful obedience will stand firm in the storms we face.

When some of us read the word obedience, we cringe because we think of some kind of legalistic approach to life. But, if we really listen and then obey the words of Christ, we will experience a deeper, more fulfilling life.

Chuck Swindoll put it this way:

“Few things are more infectious than a godly lifestyle. The people you rub shoulders with everyday need that kind of challenge. Not prudish. Not preachy…. Just honest to goodness, bone-deep, non-hypocritical integrity.”

Chuck Swindoll
