For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function, so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; if service, in our serving; the one who teaches, in his teaching; the one who exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who contributes, in generosity; the one who leads, with zeal; the one who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness.
Romans 12:4-8
Over the weekend, Patrina and I spent some time consulting with another church consider some options about their video and sound systems. As I observed on Sunday, two of the men I met with brought up the idea of full-time ministry. Each of them questioned their work outside of the church and wanted to do more.
Their thoughts and desires resonated with me. I’ve had those same questions and I know others who have experienced the same ambitions and I also know that not everyone is called to vocational ministry, but we are called to ministry nonetheless.
We are members of “one body in Christ”. The Scripture tells us we are “members of one another.” So we belong to each other, but how often do we compare our strengths and weaknesses instead of appreciating how others complement our roles?
How are we to make the most impact with our lives? The answer is in focusing less on our differences and acting on the strengths God has give each of us. As Paul wrote in the verses above, we should rely on our strengths and get to work!
