“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they will not overflow you. … For I am the Lord your God …”
Isaiah 43: 2-3a
Where is God when the water is rising? Over the last few years we’ve seen areas in Texas and North Carolina inundated with flood waters. I saw one video of a home floating down the street. Total destruction and total devastation for a family. Not only was their home destroyed, but entire communities are in ruins.
Now, maybe you haven’t experienced a flood, but chances are you have experienced a significant loss in this journey of life. Maybe it was the loss of a parent or spouse, an illness or job loss, or ___________. It is in times like these that many ask the question – where is God in my calamity?
I still remember a very specific time and place when I was at the end of my rope. I can take you to the exact place where I reminded of a verse I lean on from Psalms –
“The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit” (Psalm 34:18).
When you face the floodwaters of your circumstances, you can be encouraged that God is near. He can keep you (us) from drowning in despair. Again, I am reminded of this verse from Jeremiah 32:17 –
“Ah Lord God! Behold, You have made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and by Your outstretched arm! Nothing is too difficult for You.”
