When Ahab saw Elijah, Ahab said to him, “Is it you, you troubler of Israel?” And he answered, “I have not troubled Israel, but you have, and your father’s house, because you have abandoned the commandments of the LORD and followed the Baals. Now therefore send and gather all Israel to me at Mount Carmel, and the 450 prophets of Baal and the 400 prophets of Asherah, who eat at Jezebel’s table.”

And Elijah came near to all the people and said, “How long will you go limping between two different opinions? If the Lord is God, follow him; but if Baal, then follow him.” And the people did not answer him a word.

1 Kings 18: 17-19, 21-22

This afternoon I spoke with a friend about the growing trend of people who have deconstructed—or abandoned—their Christian faith. Many have not necessarily embraced another organized religion; instead, they have turned away from convictions they once professed. While I am fully confident that Christ will build His church and that Christianity will endure (Matthew 16:18), it is still heartbreaking to witness.

As Elijah prepared to confront King Ahab and the prophets of Baal, the people of Israel found themselves at a crossroads. They seemed unwilling to choose between the LORD and Baal, and when Elijah challenged them to decide, “the people did not answer him a word.”

Most of us know the familiar story. After preparing their altars, Elijah and the prophets of Baal agreed that the true God would be revealed by answering with fire. As Elijah declared, “The God who answers by fire, He is God.”

The prophets of Baal cried out for hours, but Scripture records that “there was no voice. No one answered; no one paid attention.” Their efforts produced nothing because their god was powerless to save.

Then Elijah stepped forward and offered a simple prayer—just 63 words in the King James Version many of us grew up reading. The response was immediate and unmistakable. The LORD answered with fire from heaven, and when the people witnessed it, they fell on their faces and proclaimed, “The Lord, He is God! The Lord, He is God!” (1 Kings 18:39).

Elijah’s story reminds us that God is still worthy of our trust, even when the culture around us drifts in another direction. Elijah stood faithfully when many others wavered, and God proved Himself faithful.

Our calling today is much the same. We may not stand on Mount Carmel, but we are called to stand firmly in our faith, trusting that God is still at work. When others walk away, let it strengthen our resolve to draw nearer to Him. The same God who answered Elijah’s prayer still reigns today, and He continues to reveal Himself to those who seek Him with sincere hearts.
