Wake up and smell the coffee.

As he sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately, saying, “Tell us, when will these things be, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?”

Matthew 24:3

Let’s face it—everything is not okay in our world. That may be the understatement of the year. When we look at the headlines, the conflicts, the uncertainty, and the brokenness around us, it’s understandable why many people are asking questions about the future.

The disciples asked Jesus a similar question in Matthew 24. They wanted to know what signs would accompany His return and the fulfillment of God’s plan. You would think that in times like these, more people would be interested in what the Bible says about such matters. Yet many seem indifferent, and some dismiss the promise of Christ’s return as nothing more than a science fiction story.

Jesus anticipated this response. His first warning was:

“See that no one leads you astray. For many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and they will lead many astray”

Matthew 24:4

That warning raises some important questions. How are people led astray? How can we recognize the truth? How can we stand firm when so many voices compete for our attention?

The answer is both simple and profound: we must know Christ and His Word. If we are followers of Jesus but spend little time learning His teachings, how can we confidently discern truth from error?

The good news is that God has not left us guessing. He has given us His Word, His Spirit, and the encouragement of fellow believers. Rather than being fearful or confused by the times in which we live, we can draw closer to Christ, grow in our understanding of Scripture, and find confidence in the One who holds the future in His hands.
