Who do you trust?

Don’t put your trust in mere humans. They are as frail as breath. What good are they?

Isaiah 2:22

The people of Israel knew the one true God and yet they proceeded to put their trust in everything but God. Nothing is likely to be more insulting to God than when we put our trust in ourselves or other humans and ignore God’s place in our world.

It can’t happen today, can it? Consider the following passage –

For you have rejected your people,
the house of Jacob,
because they are full of things from the east
and of fortune-tellers like the Philistines,
and they strike hands with the children of foreigners.
Their land is filled with silver and gold,
and there is no end to their treasures;
their land is filled with horses,
and there is no end to their chariots.
Their land is filled with idols;
they bow down to the work of their hands,
to what their own fingers have made.

Isaiah 2: 6-8

The LORD rejected His people because they were unfaithful to Him. Spiritually, they turned to false eastern religions and idols. The depended on their wealth because there was “no end to their treasures. The horses and chariots represented their military might and finally they bow down to idols made by their own hands.

Think about our culture today. How many embrace spirituality without a commitment to Christ? Do we depend on our economy over our relationship with God? Military power? Here our leaders boasts in our military power and I wonder how often we give thought to God.

People who turn away from God eventually face the consequences. As a friend said a dinner this evening, we hope those consequences will turn us back to the one true God.
