And they made his grave with the wicked
and with a rich man in his death,
although he had done no violence,
and there was no deceit in his mouth.

Isaiah 53:9

In Isaiah 53, we have some of the most significant prophecies surrounding the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. We generally know the big picture that Jesus died a sacrificial death for our sins, but God cares about the details that solidify the case for Christ.

Details matter and the each of the Gospels tell us the specifics concerning Jesus’ burial place –

Matthew tells us that Joseph of Arimathea was rich man (Matthew 27:57). Mark tells us “And Joseph bought a linen shroud, and taking him down, wrapped him in the linen shroud and laid him in a tomb that had been cut out of the rock. And he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb” (Mark 15:46) and Luke confirms the same and John provides more specifics.

After these things Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus, and Pilate gave him permission. So he came and took away his body. Nicodemus also, who earlier had come to Jesus by night, came bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds in weight. So they took the body of Jesus and bound it in linen cloths with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews. Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid.

John 19:38-41

Why do the details matter? When the Gospels were written, these details could have been easily refuted. They were not and so while the key story is Jesus’ death and resurrection, the details give us added confidence in our faith.
