Glancing back, looking ahead

by | Jan 16, 2026 | Genuine Hope | 0 comments

But recall the former days when, after you were enlightened, you endured a hard struggle with sufferings, sometimes being publicly exposed to reproach and affliction, and sometimes being partners with those so treated. For you had compassion on those in prison, and you joyfully accepted the plundering of your property, since you knew that you yourselves had a better possession and an abiding one. Therefore do not throw away your confidence, which has a great reward. For you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God you may receive what is promised.

Hebrews 10: 32-36

Over the past few days, we’ve driven nearly 2,000 miles across the country. While it’s essential to keep our eyes on the road ahead, there are moments when it’s wise to glance in the rear-view mirror—especially when you’re pulling a trailer. A quick look back can keep you grounded and aware. But driving while staring only at the mirror? That’s dangerous. If all your focus is on where you’ve been, how far can you really go?

Still, there is value in looking back—and that’s exactly what the writer of Hebrews invites us to do as we draw nearer to God.

In Hebrews 10:32–36, the author points readers to three powerful reminders:

Remember when your eyes were opened (v. 32)
Remember how you stood firm (vv. 33–34)
Remember the promise (vv. 35–36)

Do you remember when your eyes were first opened to the gospel of Jesus Christ? Is there a moment, a place, or a season that stands out when faith became real and personal for you?

Because of their faith, these believers faced public opposition. Yet they did not stand alone. When others were mistreated for the sake of Christ, they stood alongside them. They showed compassion to those in prison for the Name. They lost property—and still they held on. They stood firm.

Think back to a time when you stood firm in the face of resistance or challenge. Doesn’t remembering that strengthen your faith today?

Finally, the writer encourages them—and us—to hold tightly to our confidence, to keep moving forward with endurance, trusting that God’s promise will be fulfilled.

If you’re in a challenging place today, take a moment to glance in the rear-view mirror. Remember what God has already done. Then lift your eyes back to the road ahead, confident that He is still at work.
