When I am at a Loss for Words

Read: Romans 8:26

Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.

Reflect:

With the news of the day, it may be hard to consider the “ordinary” troubles of life. Last week we received news that a family friend would need emergency surgery. Another couple is now separated while one is in rehab and the other isn’t able to visit except to stand outside a window thanks to the threat of the coronavirus.

Have you ever received a phone call with devastating news? Have you ever been at a complete loss for words? Have circumstances left you completely helpless and alone?

At those times when we come to the end of ourselves, many of us will fall to our knees before God. Where else can we turn? And then words fail us.

Psalm 34:18 reminds us that “God is near the brokenhearted.” And in the passage above, we reminded God’s Holy Spirit intercedes on our behalf. God understands our groanings. He understands. He listens. He is faithful.

Respond:

What in your life is bearing down on you today? I have my list and I am sure I am not alone on this one.
