So to keep me from being too elated by the surpassing greatness of the revelations, a thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to harass me, to keep me from being too elated. Three times I pleaded with the Lord about this, that it should leave me. But he said to me, My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness
2 Corinthans 12: 7- 9
Have you ever wondered what Paul’s “thorn” was? You’re not alone—believers and theologians have wrestled with that question for centuries, offering many thoughtful possibilities. Yet Scripture never tells us exactly what it was. Perhaps that’s intentional, so we can each see our own story reflected in his.
Think about the “thorn” in your own life. Maybe there’s more than one. At times, it can feel like a constant source of pressure—something the enemy uses to discourage you, stir fear, or wear you down. A thorn may be physical, like a lingering illness. It might take root in your thoughts as persistent doubt, or a grief that doesn’t seem to fade. And yet, even there—especially there—God is at work.
The Lord does not waste our pain. He does not overlook our struggles. Instead, He weaves them into something purposeful and good. As we’re reminded in Romans 8:28, God “causes all things to work together for good to those who love Him and are called according to His purpose.”
That doesn’t mean every thorn is easy or welcome. But it does mean that none of them are without purpose. What the enemy intends for harm, God is able to redeem for growth, strength, and deeper dependence on Him.
So whatever your “thorn” may be today, take heart. God sees you. He is with you. And He is faithfully working—even now—for your good and His glory.
