And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
Colossians 3:17
Thinking and Speaking
Sometimes I wonder if we give much thought to our words and our actions as we live day by day and moment to moment as C.S. Lewis wrote in the quote below:
“Happy work is best done by the man who takes his long-term plans somewhat lightly and works from moment to moment ‘as to the Lord.’ It is only our daily bread that we are encouraged to ask for. The present is the only time in which any duty can be done or any grace received.”
C.S. Lewis, The Weight of Glory
So are we making the most of our present moments? Think about our words – with our words we have the opportunity to express our love and affection. Our words can motivate and teach. Our words can correct and encourage. And we all know our words can do much harm. But what difference would it make in our lives today if we first gave thought to our words? What if we spoke every word so that is honored Jesus?
Actions Speak Louder than Words
Ans what about our actions? In the verse above, Paul challenges his readers to always give their best effort no matter what they are doing – at work, at home, in relationships because we ultimately live to honor Christ in all we do. Earlier in Colossians 3, Paul tells us to “put on the new self… put on…compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience…bearing with one another…forgiving each other…put on love…be thankful…teaching and admonishing one another…”
The phrase “put on” speaks to the responsibility we have to put our service into action. So let us think about the impact of both our words and actions today – moment by moment.
