and he shall fulfill all my purpose’;
saying of Jerusalem, ‘She shall be built,’
and of the temple, ‘Your foundation shall be laid.’”

Thus says the LORD to his anointed, to Cyrus,
whose right hand I have grasped,
to subdue nations before him
and to loose the belts of kings,
to open doors before him
that gates may not be closed:

Isaiah 44:24.28-%:1,

What is the significance of the passage above? In these few verses, Isaiah’s prophesies of a King who will arrive on the scene some 150 years after these words are recorded. I can’t think of another prophecy linked to a specifically named individual, especially one who would help restore Israel. The second book of Chronicles records what happened then.

Now in the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, that the word of the LORD by the mouth of Jeremiah might be fulfilled, the LORD stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia, so that he made a proclamation throughout all his kingdom and also put it in writing: “Thus says Cyrus king of Persia, ‘The LORD, the God of heaven, has given me all the kingdoms of the earth, and he has charged me to build him a house at Jerusalem, which is in Judah. Whoever is among you of all his people, may the LORD his God be with him. Let him go up.’”

2 Chronicles 36:22-23

That’s a nice, even amazing story, but what is the significance? God keeps His promises to His people, down to the smallest detail. And so, while we wait for Christ’s return we can read for example Paul’s words on the matter in his first letter to the Thessalonians –

But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep. For this we declare to you by a word from the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep. For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord. Therefore encourage one another with these words.

1 Thessalonians 5:13-18

Since we know Cyrus fulfilled the LORD’s promise to His people. we should also be encouraged to know that Christ’s promised return will certainly take place. It’s just a matter of time.
